She said she learned more from working on the Fifth Circuit’s summary calendar with judges Alvin Rubin and Sam Johnson during her first year than she did from her first few sittings on the bench. “You get exposed to all kinds of issues on the summary calendar,” she said. Now entering her 16th year on the Fifth Circuit, Judge Jones describes her years in the judiciary as a “frantic balancing of judicial demands versus rearing the boys.” Her judicial philosophy centers around a “less is more” theme. “The federal judiciary has an important but ultimately limited role in society,” she said. “I favor legislative authority over judicial authority. We have an obligation to make law as clear as possible. It is law to guide all of the people.”
Judge Jones has written articles on death penalty procedures, bankruptcy and mass tort litigation, and the judiciary’s workload. From 1982-83, she served as General Counsel for the Republican Party of Texas, and recently served on the National Bankruptcy Review Commission for two years. She is presently on the board of directors of the Boy Scouts, the Garland Walker American Inns of Court, and is a member of several American Bar Association committees.
